the fishermen

Puri, Odisha, is somewhere I am critical of for its Hindu exclusivity, but this one time I woke up at 4AM and went to the beach to see all the fishing boats having come to life, by the fishermen who take them out to sea. It's a beautiful time of day, and a peculiar kind of brave labour, to see these men confront the dusky water, as the sun still remains unseen. Fish is a staple food of Bengal, and it was wonderful to witness the work that goes behind it, especially as a ritual, almost like an awakening.
