The painting above was made by me around age eight when I lived in Singapore, and is acrylic on canvas, (2002). The original is in colour. I began painting before I really understood what it was, because I was drawn to wanting to create images. I also found it more enjoyable than being in school most of the time, and so I would take classes after school. Aside from being therapeutic, I often find painting is a great starting point for conceptualising projects, whether that is writing or film. It allows for expression that breaks free from structure and logic, and is a two-dimensional medium that is, for me, about self-discovery.
